The Positive Traits of the Doshas

When it comes to talking about the Doshas I  think the positive traits are often overlooked.  Often when talking about someone’s Dosha we are talking about their imbalance, but there are two ways to look at the traits people have. One is their imbalance and the other is their balanced state.  Both are important in finding health.

The road to health can feel like hard work sometimes, so it’s good to also spend time enjoying yourself, to make the process worth it.

Positive Vata Traits :

Enthusiastic, Artistic, Creative, Tend to be good Dancers, Great at starting projects

Positive Kapha Traits:

Strong Endurance, Good at finishing up tasks, Jovial, Deeply care for family and friends

Positive Pitta Traits:

Good at task management, Good at completing tasks, Driven, Logical ideas, Show up on time

Fun things to keep the Doshas Balanced

Vata: Art is grounding and focusing.

Pitta: Being in nature especially wood and water areas.

Kapha: Any movement, walking, hiking, even reading about activities help create momentum to take action.

The thing to remember is that everyone has all three Doshas but in different percentages.  So you may have qualities from any of these lists.  It’s important to understand that the way the Doshas go out of balance affect how we act, more than you realize, but that also means that you have the power to change them. Ayurveda helps pinpoint what to work on and incorporate into your diet and lifestyle to make life seem smoother and you can be the person you want to be.

Fall is Here are you Ready?

Fall is here!  For a lot of places that means cold weather, but here in the Colorado desert we have been having a lot of different types of weather, heat wave to snow, to 60’s.  Which is why  Ayurveda is a day to day science.  It is not just a set formula, sometimes we need to adapt rather rapidly paying attention to how your feeling and what the weather is.

If it’s cold where you are now, think warming oils like sesame for Abhyanga (self full body massage) and Nasya (oil in the nose) if you are Vata and pittas can switch from coconut to a little less cooling oil like grapeseed or avocado oil.  Yes this is a great time to start Nasya if you don’t practice it regularly to help with post nasal drip.

If you live in a place where it’s still warm during the day keep paying attention to staying hydrated during the day and eat more grounding foods and healthy fats at night as it cools down.

If you are have trouble with digestion as the sun sets earlier try spicing your food for your dosha.  Some neutral spices are Coriander and Fennel.     Or eating less for dinner and more at lunch.  You can also try some digestive tea like mint in the evening.

 

5 Things you Need to Know about Essential Oils Before You Put Them On

A lot of people don’t take essential oils seriously, they just think they’re something that smells good, like perfume.  Here are 5 things you need to know before you put them on, especially #1.

1.  How to Take off Essential Oils-  Just because Essential Oils are natural doesn’t mean your going to like the smell of all of them.  Sometimes they smell good at first and the as it fades or mixes with your natural oils,  you don’t like it anymore.  Or worse, it gives you a rash, makes you feel sick or heated.
Apply a carrier oil, preferably olive oil.  Then wash off with soap and water.  Only oil attracts oil which helps draw it off your skin.

2. Essential oils can affect medications you are taking.-  If you are taking a medication, Essential Oils, like herbs can affect the the medicines affectiveness.  Don’t use an essential oil that does the same thing as your medication without consulting your doctor.

3.  Just because it smells good doesn’t mean it’s right for you.-  Ayurveda says a body in balance craves things to keep it in balance and a body out of balance, craves things that keep it out of balance.  So test an essential oil before you buy it, and see how you react to it as well as look up what the negatives and positives of the essential oil are.

4.  Not all essentials are created equal.-  Be aware of where your essential oils come from.  Are they Organic, sustainably harvested, and fair trade?  Are there only essential oils in that bottle?  This is important because your skin is your largest digestive organ and what you put on it goes into your blood stream.

5. Some essential oils are on the Endangered and Vulnerable- list, yet are still being sold, a couple are: Sandalwood, Frankincense and Rose Wood.

How to Prepare for the Holidays

Vata’s tend to get overwhelmed.
Quick fix,Stay hydrated, stick to your normal routine as much as possible even when out of town(bed time, when you eat, ext.) make step by step list of things that need to get done and do a few steps every day.

Pitta’s tend to take over and get angry.
Quick fix, go for a walk (or just in general walk away from agitating situations), avoid spicy foods, focus on relaxing the space between the eyebrows, this area becomes scrunched when agitated and by releasing it consciously helps calm anger.

Kaphas tend to be wall flowers and over eat.
Quick fix try to stay in well ventilated and bright areas, smell digestive essential oils after eating to increase digestion, bring a game or have interesting topics of conversation to help eat less and hang out with family more.

Essential Oils for Melancholy and Depression 
Depression and Melancholy can show up differently in each Dosha and each individual.  Sometimes during times of change including the seasons changing, child birth, birthdays and moving can increase melancholy and overwhelm.
Vata’s often embody depression and melancholy as overwhelm, anxiety.  Overwhelm can cause Vata’s to feel as though they don’t want to get out of bed, and can’t handle daily tasks.
Essential Oils for Vata Melancholy

Lemon PV-K=

Pitta’s can display depression and melancholy as anger, burying themselves in work and over exercising.
Essential Oils for Pitta Melancholy
Neroli PV-K+ also helps with Pitta skin inflammation
Jasmine PK-V+  also helps with anxiety and increasing confidence
Geranium PK-V+ another helpful anti inflammatory

Kapha’s often show depression as lethargy, isolation, dullness and moodiness.
Essential Oils for Kapha Melancholy

Ginger VK-P+  Heating and increases circulation

Most essential oil antidepressants also help the specific Doshas digestion.  Proper digestion is one of the key focuses Ayurveda uses to help with keeping the body in balance, so eating a diet that is calming for your Dosha also increases effectiveness.

Yoga and Ayurveda for Fall

Fall is here.  Yay, my favorite season!  Below are a couple of poses, great for helping you stay balanced during the changing seasons and some Ayurveda tips.  Make sure to warm up before you start.


Sit in a comfortable position and place one hand on top of the other over the heart.  Take 5 deep breaths as you bring your attention into the heart center.  This is great for calming Vata fear and Pitta Anger.  VPK=


Kneeling with heals in the glutes and toes tucked under.  Take 3 -5 deep breaths depending on pain tollerance.  This is great for opening the sinuses, to relieve allergies and improve digestion.  PK-V+ in excess.


Ustrasana-Camel Opens the chest to relieve any Kapha stagnation. (Detoxing)VP+ in excess K-


Matsyandrasans– Lord of the Fishes Pose increases circulation and digestion.  Stay tall and take 3 belly breaths. VPK-


Pashimotanasana-seated forward fold (1 or two legs) good for grounding and digestion.  Make sure to hinge from the hips not the back.  VP-K+


Balasana-Childs pose variation. Make fists and place them in the crease of the leg by the low belly.  Fold forward, head to floor or place a prop to support head.  Take 5 deep breaths.  Great for stimulating the peristaltis/ bowl movent.  (Do this on an empty stomach)

Vata’s start increasing an intake warm, moist, grounding foods, so you don’t blow away as the days become increasingly Vata.  Don’t forget healthy fats for your diet like sesame seed oil for cooking and abhyanga.

Pitta’s time to decrease the heat with bitters and leafy greens, before that heat gets trapped by the cold.  Maybe even a liver detox.

Kapha’s time to increase that circulation so you don’t accumulate more toxins as the cold sets in.  You can try some ginger or spicy teas.

I wanted to write this post, because the other night, I had a dream in sepia tone.  What’s crazier is that I was going to meet Orson Wells in the dream, you know the old-time radio drama writer and actor.

Diagnosing your Dreams with Ayurveda

Vata’s dream in bright vivid color.  There is usually a lot of movement and things morfing into other things.  Flying dreams and stress dreams are often associated with Vata as well.

Pitta’s are the ones who get to dream in Black and White.  When I heard this I didn’t believe it, I hadn’t even considered someone not dreaming in color, but it’s true.  A woman I worked at a coffee shop with, said her dreams were usually in black and white, and she had blond hair, blue eyes and rosy red cheeks and angular face, definitely a Pitta.  Pitta dreams may also contain blood or feeling warm, like a desert ext.

Kapha’s tend to have slower dreams that may look like movie stills.  Dreams of being stuck, can also be associated with Kapha.

Ayurveda says that dreams that happen before 2am are your body breaking down things that have happened throughout the day, and that dreams after 2am are the ones that have a better chance of being prophetic.

Dreams would be considered a part of the diagnosis for your Vikruti or imbalance.  As a practitioner, we do not look at just one thing in a person’s life we look at many things going on and their interactions to determine a Dosha.  But keeping track of your dreams and if they change in appearance could give you an upper hand on if your Vikruti (Doshic imbalance) has changed.

Yoga Weight Loss for Beginners

Sometimes loosing weight can become overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.  I was making this video for a client and decided to snaz it up a little and share it with all of you.  It is a 15 minute yoga weightloss  for beginners video Click here.

3 Things to Remember when it comes to Weight Loss:

1. Movement, doesn’t have to be fast.  Vinyasa actually translates: “to place in an intentional way”.  It doesn’t take much to get the blood and lymph moving.

2.  A balanced digestion is a huge part of weight loss.  In this video we activate the digestive organs and stretch the digestive points on the backs of the legs.

3.  Having a strong foundation or base helps with weight loss.  A calm mind, calms Vata and helps prevent constipation and creates a balanced digestion.  The more aware you are allows you to know when you are full.  And being rooted helps prevent binge eating.

Stop the Holiday Blues with these 10 Yoga Poses

For some the Winter and Holidays can be filled with joy and for others it becomes a time of Melancholy, Overeating and Anxiety.  Yoga is an amazing tool that you can always use to overcome these issues.

Yoga for the Doshas: Depression
Make sure to warm up with a couple sun salutations.

Vata’s can express depression as overwhelm and anxiety.  Not wanting to get out of bed in the morning and not eating enough.  Too much to do and too many people to please.
Yoga poses for Vata Depression: Childs Pose (Balasana), Reclined/Supported Fish Pose (simple Matsyasana), Legs up a Wall (Viparita Karani) and Abdominal Breath.
These poses release fear and stress as well as activate the digestive system.

Pitta’s can express depression as Anger, Intensity and become Overdriven.  This means pulling all nighters and feeling the need to do everything themselves.  As well as frequent outbursts at loved ones and co-workers.
Yoga poses for Pitta depression: Heart Chakra Pose (Anahatasana), Humble Warrior, Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana), Half Lord of the Fish Pose (Ardha Matsyandrasana).
These poses are detoxing, cooling and calming.

Kapha’s can express depression as Lethargy, Dullness of the Mind, and Overeating.  This can show up as not leaving the house, lack of motivation and energy.
Yoga Poses for Kapha depression: Head stand (Sirsasana), Cross Bar Pose preparation (Parigasana), Ustrasana (Camel Pose), Lions Breath and active Fish Pose (Matsyasana).
These Poses are energizing, get the lymph moving, and open the lungs.

It’s time to break out of that funk!

Ayurveda 7 Day Simple Detox

Wow the weather sure got cold fast, at least here in Northern Colorado. Even if you didn’t prepare your body before hand for the changing seasons, you can do this gentle cleanse to help prevent your Vata from pushing your Pitta. Translation since Vata is the only Dosha that moves, and is considered the imposter because it can create its own version of symptoms. As we head into the Vata season the “wind” can push your Pitta and cause anger, heat in the body and other Pitta symptoms to flare up. This cleanse will help reduce this, it is also good for reducing Kapha. If you are Vata and do the cleanse make sure to keep healthy fats in your diet and grounding foods.

The way this works is that you implement one new thing a day while still doing the things that were recomended for the day before it.
Day1 Replace Animal Protein with Vegetable Protein. (exmp beans and rice, quinoa, tempe ext.

Day2 Increase Leafy Greens by one serving. (you can saute vegies to help eat more without the added volume.)

Day3 Spice your food with neutral spices like fennel and corriander to help stoke the digestive fire.

Day4 Drink 62oz of hydration (water, tea, soup) a day.
